Convert Your Bicycle to Electric
with Michael Bock, assisted by Ross Randrup and Bob Martin
Three saturdays beginning July 18th, 8:30 AM, and continuing August 1st and 8th
$105($35 per Saturday) if prepaid in full by July 12th
$135($45 per Saturday) after July 12th
We need five attendees to make it fly, so if we don't have five by July 15th, we'll reserve the right to cancel.
Turn your bike into a Hybrid, Human-Electric Vehicle.
In these three sessions, we'll discuss the requirements for participants bicycles; Mountain Bikes, Recumbents, Trikes or other, and present some design considerations to help each person decide how their electric bike shall be outfitted. We will then build battery packs, install wiring harness, install drive systems, test and, if necessary, troubleshoot.
Course Outline
Saturday July 18th
• Hot Air day; we're gonna talk and look at bikes
• Participants will bring in a bike they want to hybridize(convert)
• Sample some manufactured electric bikes with specs
• A look at some of Michaels bikes with performance specs and cost comparisons.
• How to design a bike for a particular purpose.
– Considerations on range, weight of batteries, speed, dependability
• Battery Considerations: Chemistries, Package types, Life cycle of lithium batteries, care & feeding
• Battery location on bike, with consideration for bike handling and easy removal.
• Motors:
– Mid-drive systems: E-4 and EcoSpeed; Gearing; Chain-work; Idlers oh my!
– Hub motors and controllers: Golden, Amped, Crystalyte, eZee etc
• Charging from grid and solar panels; some ideas for producing your own fuel
• Design system with participants (some people may choose to have a bike built to their needs by others)
• Create a material list and collect funds for any parts needed.(discounted pricing for participants)
Saturday August 1st
• Hands-on day
• Create the battery carriers and install racks
• fabricate brackets and hardware if needed
• Install hub or mid-drive motors and controllers
• assemble/install chains
• Route wiring, connect and check system
• Check brakes and other bike mechanics
• Order additional parts as needed
Saturday August 8th
• Finish-up day
• Build the battery packs with BMS
• Mount battery packs, Connect
• Test drive and/or Troubleshoot
• Group Ride down the Bike Path ?
If you would like to attend just the first Saturday, we are open to the possibility; contact us.
Also, we hope to offer the workshop again, so if you need to miss the final day, there will be opportunities to complete your project; you may arrange with Ross for assistance.
Materials:
Materials costs for this class could vary widely, depending on your choice of components, ability to scrounge etc, but expect to spend a minimum of $400 for a drive system, unless you have some components already. Payment plans are possible, ask.
We can order components for you, or you can source your own. We'll offer some level of discount, for some components, if sourced through eMotors.
If you have a Bike Repair Stand, please bring it along.
Fees:
$105($35 per Saturday) if prepaid in full, through July 12th
$135($45 per Saturday) after July 12th
or
$40 deposit holds your place; non-refundable after July 15th
Yes, we'll consider a scholarship or other forms of payment besides greenbacks; if you need it, ask. We'll see what we can work out.
